The Wisdom of The Odyssey

What Does It Really Mean to Come Home?

When we hear the word home, most of us immediately think of a place.

A house.

A country.

A family.

But what if home is something much deeper than an address?

This question sits at the heart of my recent conversation with mythologist, filmmaker, and bestselling author Phil Cousineau, whose latest book, The Wisdom of the Odyssey, arrives just as Christopher Nolan's highly anticipated film adaptation of The Odyssey introduces one of humanity's oldest stories to a new generation.

Yet what struck me most wasn't the spectacle of the film or even the epic adventures of Odysseus.

It was the reminder that every one of us is travelling our own Odyssey.

Phil beautifully describes The Odyssey as more than a story about monsters, gods, or impossible journeys. Beneath all of that is a deeply human question:

How do we find our way home to ourselves?

That question feels especially relevant today.

Many people are navigating uncertainty, burnout, loss, change, and a longing for something they can't quite name. We chase success, relationships, possessions, and recognition, only to discover that the thing we're truly searching for isn't outside of us at all.

It's an inner home.

One of the most moving moments in our conversation came when Phil spoke about trauma. He reminded me that Odysseus doesn't simply return from war and carry on with life. He spends years finding his way back—not just geographically, but emotionally and spiritually.

Healing takes time.

Returning to ourselves takes time.

And perhaps that's one of the greatest lessons the ancient story still offers us.

Another idea that stayed with me was Phil's invitation to become the storyteller of our own lives.

So often we become trapped inside stories that have been written for us—stories shaped by family, culture, fear, or circumstance. Yet healing begins when we become conscious enough to tell our own story with honesty, compassion, and meaning.

That feels deeply connected to the work I do with voice.

Our authentic voice doesn't simply communicate words.

It reveals who we are.

It carries our experiences, our truth, our courage, and our capacity to create new narratives.

Perhaps that's why storytelling has endured for thousands of years. Stories don't merely entertain us; they help us remember ourselves.

Throughout our conversation, Phil returned again and again to one central idea:

**Go deeper.**

Don't simply watch the film.

Don't simply admire the story.

Ask yourself why it moves you.

Which character reflects your own journey?

Where have you become lost?

What are you truly seeking?

And perhaps most importantly...

**What does home mean to you?**

I left our conversation feeling that The Odyssey isn't just ancient Greece at all.

It's about each of us.

Every challenge.

Every heartbreak.

Every moment we forget who we are.

And every courageous step we take towards remembering.

Maybe that's why this story has survived for over 3,000 years.

Because every generation, in its own way, is trying to find its way home.
