Healing Your Career Wounds
Jul 15, 2026Is Burnout Really About Work? Or Is It About Losing Ourselves?
We often think of burnout as a problem to solve by taking a holiday, changing jobs, or learning to manage stress more effectively. But what if burnout isn't simply about working too hard? What if it's the body's way of telling us that we've drifted too far from ourselves?
That question sits at the heart of my conversation with career coach, holistic healer, and author Mandy Tang.
Mandy's work explores something she calls "career wounds"—the unconscious beliefs and survival patterns that quietly influence the way we work, lead, communicate, and define success. These aren't simply workplace habits. They're often adaptations that began much earlier in life and followed us into our careers without us ever realising.
Throughout our conversation, we explore why so many high-achieving people become trapped in cycles of overworking, over-giving, and constantly proving themselves. Success can become a mask for deeper needs: the need to feel worthy, accepted, or safe. From the outside, everything may appear successful, yet internally there can be a growing sense that something no longer fits.
One of the most powerful themes we discuss is alignment.
Alignment isn't necessarily about leaving your career or making dramatic life changes. More often, it's about becoming honest with yourself. It's about recognising where you've been living from obligation rather than authenticity, fear rather than trust, or expectation rather than inner knowing.
Mandy shares her own experiences with remarkable openness, reflecting on burnout, personal transformation, and the journey of rebuilding a life that feels more congruent with who she truly is. Her story is both deeply personal and widely relatable, reminding us that meaningful change doesn't always begin with external action—it often begins with awareness.
We also explore the subtle ways childhood experiences shape our professional lives, why people-pleasing can become a survival strategy, and how our nervous system influences the choices we make. These insights offer a compassionate perspective for anyone who has ever wondered why they keep repeating the same patterns, even when they know better intellectually.
What I particularly appreciated about this conversation is that it never suggests there is something wrong with us. Instead, it invites us to become curious. To notice. To listen. To ask ourselves whether the version of success we're striving for is one we consciously chose—or one we inherited.
If you've been questioning your career, feeling disconnected from your work, or sensing that the life you've built no longer reflects who you are becoming, I hope this conversation offers both reassurance and inspiration.
Sometimes the next chapter doesn't begin by changing everything around us.
Sometimes it begins by remembering ourselves.
